Escape

Raziel

…Darkness…nothingness...

…So, this is what death is like?...

Fuck, I can still think. I just wanted everything to end, but I still have my pain and the hole in my soul from losing everything.

I can’t feel my body. I hope this isn’t a state I’ll be stuck in. Purgatory…what a horrifying thought. I just want to stop thinking, I want complete oblivion, no thoughts, no feelings, why can’t I just have that?

I see a pinprick of light and move toward it. Is that the tunnel people keep talking about? I’m not sure how I’m moving, since I don’t have a body anymore, but I will my consciousness to go toward it. The light grows larger and larger until it takes up my whole field of vision.

Fuck, it’s too bright now, it hurts, it hurts…I try to cover my eyes, but I can’t move…the feeling is back in my arms and legs, but they don’t obey, they are held down? I’m dead, I shouldn’t feel my body. What is happening? I thrash around, in a panic and trying to get free.

“TURN IT OFF ALREADY!” I hear a familiar voice yell…Cori? But she is…

“Okay, okay, we will take a break!” …but…what? Doctor Marinogue? No, that can’t be, they are all dead or they were dying when I saw them last.

There is a horrible high-pitched whining inside my ear. Insects? Like flies…the flies inside Jenga’s mouth.

My head…I can’t…can’t think. Too bright…the noise…!

And then with a click…everything comes to a sudden stop!

“Raziel? Raz? Can you hear me?” Cori…that’s Cori…but she is…? I open my eyes, but the light is too bright and I squint, drawing in gasps of air.

“He is confused! Give him a few minutes, maybe get him something to drink.”

Drink? Oh yeah, I was dying of thirst, but I’m not as thirsty anymore. Wait, I blew my brains out, I should be dead. What the fuck is going on?

They undo the straps on my arms and legs. My hands automatically go to my head, to feel if it has a hole in it, but it all feels normal. I’m handed something cold and round and I instinctively bring it to my mouth and swallow. Oh, it’s cool and bubbly and…and sweet. This helps. As these sensations of cold and sweet shoot through my veins and brain, my mind clears a bit and I’m trying to grasp what is going on.

“You’re dead, you’re all dead! Is this the afterlife? I saw you die or dying.” Lord Aza is looking at me sternly and addresses the scientists. “Did you fry his brain? He seems very confused.”

My body feels weird, like it’s overloaded or something. Something isn’t right…something…is happening...something…! I let out a grunt and I feel myself falling to the floor, twitching. The sweet drink spilling out beside me. Cori runs over to me. “He’s having a seizure!” She yells as she moves everything out of the way so I couldn’t hurt myself. She tugs something soft under my head and just holds me as the tremors race through my body.
